Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love my machine [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My husband bought me this mower 3 years ago. I LOVE doing yard work, and I do our pasture work by push mowing, not riding. We have roughly 15-20 acres in the family that I take care of. After reading reviews at the time, I wanted to wait to post my review til I KNEW for sure what this mower could do since for us it was a major purchase/and HUGE upgrade from the normal 21" cut of a small lawn mower. I believe there is a little over 400 hours on the meter now. I am 5'3" tall and at first it was a lot of getting used to having the plow type handles, and this being so much heavier than the little 19-21 inch push mower. Once I learned how to work WITH the mower, we became unstoppable. This mower has ate up all kinds of ground and has went through anything I have put it through out in the pastures and opening up some new areas from the thick underbrush. It has been a long running joke in the family that my tiny push mowers were not brush hogs as I like to use them. Well, my new, now not so tiny walk behind mower eats everything up!!! This machine is not listed/advertised as a brush hog but it sure acts like one. We handle everything with ease now, including any steep hills. I simply let my machine pull me up the hill. We have 5 separate pastures ranging in size from 1 acre to 5 acres. This machine takes care of them all. The horses eat the grasses and I come in behind them and clean up what they don't eat. I am now able to get ALL the pastures ready at the end of Winter, BEFORE the rotational grazing begins in the Spring. Then we have the non pastured sections, and this machine can give the look of a finishing mower. Like I said, once I learned how to work WITH the machine, we go through everything super easy and quick. The pastures are just a quick knock down of what the horses have not ate before it's time to move them to new pasture, I don't necessarily care what the mow looks like as in those areas I mow for grazing not looks. But this machine also does a really neat and clean look on my yard area also. I always have it set on the highest mow no matter where I am. I can easily load this mower in the bed of the truck with the use of ramps. Put it in 1st gear, leave the throttle on low speed, and it just walks its self right on up there. Same with unloading it. There it is folks, from a 5'3", 51 yr old woman. I LOVE MY MACHINE. Work with the mower and not against it and you will love it also.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Underwhelming Performance and Under Engineered Being that this has indirectly evolved through company acquisition of the original Troybilt and Bolens models of more than 25 years prior one would expect improvement from the earlier products rather than digression. Where do I start? The first thing I noticed was that it is no longer possible for the mower blade engagment handle to stay locked down without removing your hand. On the old model you could take your hand off the blade engagment handle once the drive handle on the other side was engaged allowing you to guide the machine below overhanging branches or for you to swat a mosquito on your face or whatever. As soon as you took your hand off the drive handle everything stopped. Now you need both hands to keep everything engaged and good luck not getting your glasses swiped off your face when cutting below overhanging branches. I can understand it might be considered a safety issue but the previous method was perfectly safe though it required a little more cost to implement those mechanical devices within the mower deck. The second issue is that the discharge chute can't be removed as part of it is required to hold the mulch plug in place. So now you can't get close to a fence or building because the discharge chute still protrudes enough to bounce on the fence or building because it doesn't go all the way up when holding the mulch plug in. So in order to allow the edge of your deck to get close to things you have to cut the plastic chute off to within a few inches of its spring and metal parts where it attaches to the deck. Thirdly, this machine does not mulch worth a darn. After you mow the lawn the clippings left behind are the original length and are not mulched at all. My 25 year old Bolens 33" wide cut self propelled that I replaced with this CC800 actually mulched and left behind clippings of 1/4" or less. Fourth, I don't like that you have to bend down to use the gear shift lever. On my old model the handle came up and through where all the other controls where at operating hands level. And I haven't tried as it specifically says to not to change gear speeds without stopping first whereas on my old mower I did it on the fly, able to slow down around tight turns as needed or speeding up as needed all on the fly. Now you have to stop and when you start again the front wheels buck up and you miss the blade cutting while the front is in the air. And when cutting up a hill now it is quite noticeable that the front will lift up and not cut so you really have to slow down now. Fifth, the transmission speeds are not right. 2nd gear is too slow and 3rd gear is too fast. So basically because I have trees in the middle of my lawn to go around and under and trees surrounding the perimeter of my 2/3 acre of lawn, a gate to go through, planters, and transitions within areas requiring cutting I can only cut in the 2nd gear and it takes me 33% longer which is 1/2 hour longer than the 1 1/2hrs it used to take with the old mower. Actually if you are using your wheel marks as the guide for your passes you overlap and are getting about a 27" wide cut. It seems like the turning radius is greater than my old model so where I used to make a tight turn between a fence and trees now you crash into one or the other so you have to stop and reverse your way back out. And finally I find the height adjust lever protrudes outward too much and again can hit overhanging trees. And it just gives 4 selections rather than infinite height control so in my case because of roots and other things I have to go a little higher than what I could get away with before. So what do I like or see as an improvement? The engine is much beefier, it is great that it has an oil filter and fuel filter and the fact that the foam pre-cleaner on the air cleaner doesn't require oiling is such a bonus. This engine starts great and it is nice that the starting and operating throttle positions have a default setting so there is no guessing or chance of not adjusting the fuel / air mixture. Also I like the bigger fuel tank; I can fill it and get a little over 4 hours of cutting or two cuts and not have to refill in the midst of a cut. Having a larger battery is wonderful and is the same as batteries I have on other pieces of equipment. The front swivel wheels are much heavier duty than on my old mower. So overall, the engine has what I consider so many deluxe features and more than enough excessive power, but the mower itself though it works, is a disappointment especially when there was so much better technology existing for more than 1/4 century from which it could have adapted and even improved upon.
