Product Reviews

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cub Cadet mulch kit [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Make sure it’s the proper blade for your mower. I needed a different bolt hole but the kit was listed for my model. The “right part guarantee” seems to have been forgotten.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from needs a lot of improvement [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I saw the reviews saying this was crap and they were right but I didnt have another choice. My yard is long but narrow and I was tired of discharging clippings into my ac unit and onto my neighbors lawn. The blades are good, but better if you give them a sharpen after the first couple mowings. the plug will not stay secure and youll be covered in grass and dust by the end of the mow. what i dont understand is how cub cadet leaves holes around the deck where the plug would attach yet there are no holes in the plug or any way to secure the bottom. it willl clog with grass pretty quick and youll be wearing the clippings in no time. cmon cub cadet, you're better than that

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Good but Not Prefect The only issue with the kit is the deck plug. It does not seal the opening very well and grass gets stuff in the cracks of the opening. Other then that the blades are solid and do the job.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mulch cover issue The cover needs to be redesigned. It gathers clippings and deposits it on the lawn as lines or clumps. I always have to remove to clean up the stuck clippings

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice mulch kit. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Works great. Looking back at mowed yard, there were no signs clippings or clumps of grass. It doesn’t seal great but it doesn’t blow out all over. It just gets plugged with grass and then it’s sealed. If you don’t like that then you can add some foam weather stripping around inside edge of mulch plug and that should seal it. But lawn looks great and issues about the seal are just not there with mine. I don’t know what to say other than I love it. Now I just have to take it off to start the fall clean up and get all the leaves in the bagger. They are just now starting to fall slowly. The leaves will not mulch up like the grass.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but needy I've been using this for a few years now and I've found the plug should probably not be made of plastic since it flexes too much. I have to take it off an clean the area after each use since grass will build up on the edges causing it to bulge out and allowing some grass to come out from around it. For it to work properly you have to clean it often. I wish I would have known the differences between stamped and fabricated decks so I could have gotten a fabricated deck in stead. It and it's accessories seem to be higher quality.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Could have been made better for the high price For the price of this kit, the cover should have been made of metal or a thicker plastic to seal against the deck better. As many other do complain that the grass makes it way between the cover and the deck and you constantly have to remove it to keep it clean

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works fine, if it will stay in place [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The blades work fine, but as others have said, the plug doesn't fit well enough to stay sealed, and you end up with a clog of grass pushing it out, or with grass just spraying out the hole. A temporary solution is to clean the deck really good, then use some gorilla tape to hold the plug in place for one cutting. A better solution would be to attach one or two bolts along the bottom of the plug to hold it in place. In the spring, I plan on drilling some small holes in the thin portion of the deck, below hole, mount it more securely.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointed [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I ordered this for my new ZT1 46 FAB mower. It came installed by the local partner. It is not installed wrong, it simply doesn't fit right. Of all the places to have an opening in the cover/plug for the deck, right on top at the front? Really guys? I mowed for the first time and was bathed on my right side in grass clippings being blown UP the opening. The control panel and my water in the cupholder COVERED in grass clippings. It must have taken me 20 minutes to blow all the clippings off the mower before I could put it away. Clippings built up on top of and around the blade pulleys and belt, did anyone ever test this plug while actually cutting grass?

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Needs to be better Blades are great, the plug doesn’t fit very good. Grass comes out around the top and bottom. Needs to be a snug fit all around.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stay away from these Pure garbage. I had a cub cadet 42” and I decided to upgrade to the 46”. What a huge mistake. I had mulching blades on my 42 and it cut perfectly. The 46 mulching kit is a nightmare. Grass gets stuck in the cover and pushes it open while not mulching the grass and leaving huge chunks of grass all over that I have to go back and try to mulch again. Do not waste your money on this. I contacted cub cadet and they told me to slow down, get the deck checked , try differ blades. Seriously? Blades are not cheap! These Xtreme mulching blades are junk. Wish I could get the old style.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great Blades but the mulch cover is worthless [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this earlier in the summer to go with my new 46” cub cadet riding mower. I am pleased with the blades and how well they work but the mulch cover is absolutely worthless. The grass builds up under it and pushes it out rendering it useless. This seems like it would be easy to reengineer and fix the problem. Since all I do is mulch, I am considering another brand for next year. So frustrating to spend that much money on a mower only to be disappointed by a cheap plastic part that was poorly designed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Blades are great! Plug cover, not so much. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Blade itself gets 5-stars. Plug gets 1-star. Average of 3 stars. As many others have mentioned, the blades are awesome. Easy to install and cut like a champ. The plug on the stamped 46" deck constantly traps grass and debris around the edge. I wind up wearing more of the grass than anything. Plus cleanup at the end of each mow means I have to remove the plug in order to wash all the debris out of the way. I've seen hacks on the internet of drilling holes and cinching with strong zip ties (I might look to see if a bolt/nut would work without hitting the blades). Very poor design on Cub Cadet's part to have it so loose. I may remove the plug cover altogether and see how it works.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Mulch cover terrible, Blades great The blades are great. The mulch cover is terrible. It does not fit well at all (as per other reviews). Grass flies up between the deck and mulch cover and between the bottom of the deck and the mulch cover. I was covered in grass. I fixed it (sort of) with gorilla tape on the top to seal the cover and the top of the deck and 4 zip ties to hold the bottom of the mulch cover tight against the bottom of the deck opening. For the zip ties, you will need to drill 4 holes in the plastic mulch cover to fish the zip ties through, then just tighten them. I would have returned the whole thing but i did not see any aftermarket mulch covers available. In any event, Cub Cadet should be embarrassed by the quality of what they sell a as a mulch cover.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 46" mulching kit The blades cut nice on the mower leaving no clippings on top of the cut. The cover does not fit well as others have mentioned throwing clippings all over the upper deck and around the belt. I was very disappointed that the blades on my deck use the s connector making it impossible to use an aftermarket blade. The blades through Cub Cadet are very expensive and you have no choice.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mulching kit for 46 inch Cub Cadet deck [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The mulching kit performs fairly well. When I cut my grass the first time, it looked like a carpet. I was very satisfied with the result. My only complaint is the deck opening cover is made of plastic instead of steel like my cover on a much older kit. This allows some of the clippings to slip through the cracks and leave a line of grass. I have to sometimes run over this a few times to pick it all up. Otherwise, I am very happy with the results. Also, it was fairly easy to install.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Design I purchased a ZTS1-46 mower the other month. I gadded the Xtreme mulching kit for an extra $100 (machine was came to over $5K after tax, you'd think it'd come with a mulching kit, hour meter, fuel gauge etc...but it does not) The plastic plug that covers the deck hole is what is poorly designed. It is flimst plastic that hooks into one hole outside of the deck on the right, then there is a small tab (approx. 3/4") that slides into the left sidewall of the deck and then it sits within the bottom lip. Lastly there is a crew on top of the plug that threads through the deck. After two passes in my yard the grass builds up inside of the deck and pushes through the plug, leaving thick grass trails behind. Others have complained about this as well. I shouldn't have to alter an expensive accessory just to make it work properly. Very disappointed in Cub Cadet for selling such a poor-performing "accessory".

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mulching kit for Cub Cadet LT46 [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] These blades are aggressive mulchers. They really shred the grass. The guard that replaced the chute works well if you get it fitted tightly. Make sure the wing nut is firmly set. If you see grass blow by, tighten the wing nut again. If it keeps getting loose you can pre-drill and add a screw or bolt/nut to hold it better. Read the instructions and notice the blades are marked "grass side" to make sure they are installed correctly (shredding wings up). Happy cutting!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Avoid these blades!! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Blade went on okay but the mulching blade and cutting experience are pretty bad. It works yes, only reason for 2 stars is that it does mulch and cut the grass. The piece they provide to stop the grass shooting out the side does NOT work, instead the grass bunches up between the cracks and once it gets full starts to push out the side. And instead of the all the grass falling to the ground as you would want and expect, the grass shoots UP through the cutting deck and flies around to the front right of you while operating. I was moving over some fallen leaves and the leaves were shooting up through the deck before they even got mulched, so completely defeating part of the reason I purchased the blades. Do NOT recommend

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lackluster Quality The plug cover is terrible it doesn't seal at all, grass blows out all the way around it. I am doubting my purchase of the mower now after seeing the complete lack of quality in the mulch kit!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good kit, no issues here [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] There are too many reviews on here that are negative. The blades were a piece of cake to put on and they cut very well. The molded plug fits in perfectly like a glove. Now there is a little bit of grass that is sticking out from the bottom, however That has not increased or gotten worse with additional mowings. Now I will agree that if you are trying to tackle a high grass area routinely and you leave this plug-in, you may be pounding the grass under the bottom of the plug, but if you are diligent on your lawn I don’t think it’s gonna be a problem. If I had to tackle high grass, as if I could mow for a few weeks due to rain, I will take the plug out, mulcher up and then reinstall after I like the kit. I’m glad I bought it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Mulching blades Mystery [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought the XT2 back in May - STILL WAITING FOR THE MULCHING BLADES I ORDERED - ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE. Very disappointed in the product availability, especially for a new mower.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Mulch plug is almost useless but decent blades [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] First, I love my mower and I am very happy with it but I am very disappointed with this kit, especially the mulching plug. The amount of grass that escapes is crazy and its like mowing in a snow globe with all the kicked up debris. I have been trying to modify or even tape around the plug but it is a maintenance nightmare after each mow, unsure what to do next.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from XT2 LX46 Bought the XT2 LX46 mower about a month ago. Mulching kit not available until September. I mowed the lawn once, and raked for 2 days. So, I paid $3000.00 for a mower I cant use, and $60.00 a week for someone to cut my lawn. I wish I would've known the mulching kit wasnt available. I would have never bought the tractor. Shame on Cub Cadet

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Extreme Much Kit Easy to install plug and blades. But plug just doesn’t fit tight, even when installed exactly as directions described. Gaps between deck and plug allow grass to escape the deck area and cloud up around operator.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible plug [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Either the person who designed this, the QA guy, or both of them need to be fired! Every purchase should come with some zip ties and duct tape because that is the only way you can keep the plug closed. If not you'll have a trail of grass clippings. If they ever design a better product everyone who purchased this mess should get a free replacement. How can they look at all the same horrible reviews and not fix this issue yet??
Date published: 2022-07-27
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not buy terrible product As many others have mentioned very bad quality. The plug is not secure and grass blows out still. There has to be a better option.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Crappy fitment. Good blades The blades are great but the block off plug is garbage on fitment. For the love of God…FIX THIS Cub Cadet

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Design [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Blades seem good but the plug doesn't stay in place. Shortly after starting the bottom separates from the deck and grass comes spraying out the side. I bought a mulching kit so I didn't have to clean up grass when I cut it but this leaves lots of grass in its wake and makes yard look sloppy. I ended up modifying it by drilling holes in and securing with zip ties and now it works. I shouldn't have had to do that.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolutely worthless hunk of plastic I've had this particular item for 6 years as I bought it with my XT2 46LX tractor. It has been a problem since day-1 and the only way I can keep it from getting forced open with clumped up grass has been to drill multiple holes in it and zip-tie it in place. Which makes swapping to side discharge or my bagger and back extra work. The sole reason I find myself here today is I figured surely by now, 6 years later, Cub Cadet would have heard feedback on what a piece of crap this plastic cover is and will have updated it to metal or at least a less-flexible plastic. I came here seeking a higher-quality replacement part to find my only recourse is to replace it with an equally-useless identical part. Bottom line: if you care about mulching, either don't buy a Cub Cadet or make sure you have a drill and a large bag of zip-ties.
