Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great blades, poor plug This was my first time using my new tractor & while the blades cut very nicely, the plug does not stay in place very well. In fact, I've been hit in the face with debris that's blown up from the top of the discharge area. You'd think that for $100 they could design a more effective plug, but the blades are more important to me anyway. Unfortunately, Cub Cadet made it so that you can only order this particular product due to the unique "S" blade mount (believe me, I tried & found out the hard way that other off-brand blades have incompatible mounts). In other words, you have NO choice. Fortunately, I've got Gorilla Tape to seal the edge gaps.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from The cover is the worst in the industry. The cover is garbage. Grass gets stuck under it propping it open enough that grass still discharges out the side leaving a line of clippings instead of a smooth even lawn. I like my mower though. Good turning radius and the Kawasaki engine provides enough power. Cub Cadet needs to do better than this garbage mulching kit. They have sold this same junk for at least a decade. The update this year is they are changing to the S style spindle so you can't buy blades from another manufacturer. How about just making great blades so that people don't want to buy off brand blades. I don't know how the blades are since I have not received them yet. I ordered them 3 weeks ago. Who sells a mower that doesn't have blades? Cub Cadet!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from worked with a little help. The kit as designed didn't work well. The plastic cover would be forced up out of position during mowing allowing grass to escape leaving large piles all over the yard. The fix was to add a bolt that went through the lower edge of the cover and deck holding it in place. This was a simple fix and the kit worked perfectly after that but shouldn't have been necessary. in all fairness i need to say that i removed the original shoot and this may.....may have contributed to the problem, but i honestly think this would have been a problem anyway. Overall though I'm pleased with the performance of the kit consideringe it was only $100.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Xtreme Mulching Kit for 46" ZTS1 installation [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] After reading many of the negative reviews here, I was hesitant to purchase the mulching kit, and decided to look at it in the store. We opened the box and the plug seemed decent, so I purchased it and figured that it could be modified to work. The installation took about 40 minutes, including replacing the 2 mulching blades. I elected not to remove the mowing deck to replace the blades, instead just working from underneath the deck which was accomplished relatively easily. The flexible mowing chute was then removed completely and in its place, I used a piece of aluminum sheet metal to cover the 3 existing holes under the chute, secured with a large washer and a 1/4" x 1" bolt and nut. Similarly, the area where the plastic tab inserts into the deck on the left side was covered with a smaller piece of aluminum sheet metal, secured with a bolt, lock washer and nut. The bottom of the plastic plug seemed to flex and because other reviewers mentioned that grass escaped there, I secured it by placing a small slotted bolt thru the existing hole in the deck, securing it with a nut underneath. This pinned the lower portion of the plug to the groove in the mower deck, ( in lieu of that bolt, a person could drill a small hole in the bottom of the plug, run it thru the 2 existing holes in the bottom of the outlet port area and pigtail a stainless or aluminum wire to secure the bottom of the plug. ) I thought about running a piece of self adhesive EPDM rubber weather stripping around the perimeter of the plug, but decided not to unless there was leakage of cut debris. I tested the modified item cutting our grass and am very pleased with how it works. There is no leakage, no debris in the air and it works perfectly. I've enclosed several pictures to explain this easy to do modification.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from XT1 mulching kit and blades. Easy to install. However, very poorly constructed once you fire up the blades. The plastic plug will not stay attached to the deck causing grass to come out without being mulched which leaves a trail in the yard. The cheap plastic tab that is supposed to hold the plug in place isn’t strong enough to do so. This plug really needs to be metal not plastic. And I will not add a self tapping screw to help secure the plug as some others have. Poorly made. Check the other reviews for similar experiences. Very disappointed

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Could've been perfect [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Blades are great but the plug doesn't fit well enough an the grass piles up around the plug an the mower deck causing a small stream of leftover grass.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poorly designed plug I am disappointed with this kit. The blades work OK but as many others have stated, the plug that is supposed to prevent grass blowing out is poorly designed. It may look good on paper but in practice it does a poor job. As you cut grass, the clippings build up and push the plug up and out. The little plastic tab at the back is not strong enough to hold the plug in place and grass clippings end up blown out the side almost the same as if you didn’t have a mulch kit installed. Many reviewers have said they drill a hole and put a screw in to hold the plug in place. I am loathe to do that and I shouldn’t have to modify a new product just to make it work properly. There are many bad reviews on this subject, I am disappointed that Cub Cadet couldn’t do better.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cub Cadet mulch kit This mulch kit was designed by an amateur. The worst one I’ve ever purchased. The blades do a good job, but the rest is junk. Besides the crappy plug that everyone seems to hate, me included, grass and anything else you may run over becomes impacted inside blade pulley safety cover and can’t be removed unless you remove the pulley safety covers. Honestly, I’m concerned that it may start to burn if the heat from friction becomes too much. I am going to change back to regular mowing mode and write this off as a $100 mistake. On a happier note, I’m satisfied with the mower itself.
