XT1-LT42 KH Cub Cadet Riding Lawn Mower Features

Specs & Maintenance

Product Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Choice After researching many models and makes, I chose the Cub Cadet. Well built, strong frame and body (100# more than most competitors) Easy to operate, 1 lever for PTO, 1 lever, easy to adjust height adjustment, hydro transmission is simple, reverse cut setting is easy and safe. High back seat is awesome (COMFORTABLE). Short turn radius, nice even cut. Gas tank level is viewable from side. Steering is smooth and easy.. What more can I say..................just a good machine at a good price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Durable and Dependable I owned this for 3 years before running into problems. It is my first rider and still runs. My problem came when I started towing a heavy wagon behind it. Don't make that mistake. A couple of cotter pins snapped but were relatively easy to replace underneath. Upside is a nice even cut, time after time, little maintenance but worth the time to do the maintenance. Downside for me was that when I resodded my St. Augustine lawn this mower, coupled with my additional weight became too heavy for the new, plusher lawn, especially when I added the rear bagger onto it. 5 stars overall because of the mowing effort it saved me for 4 years. I use it now to mow the far back end of my lawn which never got resodded. Still saves me a lot of time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product, Awesome ride I recently purchased my cub cadet 42 enduro x1 from tractor supply. I have owned 3 cub cadet over 12 years. This is my 3rd one. I never had a problem yet with my cubs. And I can't even Explain the steering on my new cub. The ride says it all. It turns as good as a brand new car. Has a great Automatic transmission does not jerk like other competitors lawnmowers. Really go buy one already!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Caught on fire! Had it since June 2019 - husband used it yesterday for 30-45 minutes then noticed flames coming out from under the engine. Burnt to a crisp!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the Hydrostatic Drive Over the past 30+ years I've owned a Wheelhorse, and a Weedeater riding mower. I was pleasantly surprised how much improvement has gone into mowers. Features such as the hose attachment to wash the mowing deck, hydrostatic drive that works like a car's accelerator pedal, even the attention to the oil drainage system all convinced me that this was the mower I need.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Controls! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] With the PTO lever as a handle on the right, and a foot pedal drive, I prefer this design compared to the competitions odd design choices. Love the hood design to improve front wheel visibility. Not all is perfect, had a recall for a poor quality rubber oil drain hose that barely lasted a few months before dry-rotting, and my battery seems to struggle cranking it over at times, and it is the right capacity and I maintain the charge level regularly. But a couple minor issues on an otherwise sweet machine. "Signature cut" is no marketing gimmick, its does a beautiful job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a good mower and not too pricey I love my Cub Cadet mower. It does the job each and every time. I have a fairly flat lawn so not sure how it would do on hills but it's been very reliable and easy to drive.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Load and Terrible Bagging I just received my XT1 LT42 yestarday. After reading many review I thought I made the correct decision. This tractor cuts the grass nicely but WOW is it load. Make sure you wear something or you'll be deaf. Tried the bagger, seem to pick up the grass pretty well but be prepared for to shower when when your done because you will be covered in dirt. Not to mention you'll have to wash the tractor because there will be dirt and dust every where. It just blows the don everything.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from awesome rider Great mower for the price. I did a fair amount of research for my first riding lawn mower and am very happy. Only complaint is that changing the oil for the first time the filter was on so tight I destroyed it trying to get it off. I was pleased with the performance of the 18 HP Kohler engine and the led headlights that are super bright.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Choice We really did our homework on XT1 (Reviews and functionality) and we are absolutely happy owners. The ease of mowing fwd and rev is wonderful. I think the only negative comment we found while researching was there wasn't a lights turn off switch. lol. The only issue we had was a loud squeak from the front axle while using the XT1 the first time. We took it in to the dealer and it was because the dealer did not lube the bushings when they assembled it. This model has bushings that need to be greased, not bearings...dealer greased bushings and we bought a grease gun for future maintenance. Great powerful smooth tractor!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Mower This the first time I have owned a mower with a Hydrostatic transmission. Really nice. The Cub Cadet XT1 is comfortable to ride and easy to get on and off and for older people with arthritis this is a plus. I mow about one acre and the XT1 has no problem getting it done quickly with a nice cut.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This isn't my father's Cub Cadet, it's mine! My father probably owned about half a dozen or more garden tractors over the span of his life. In his later years he owned his one and only Cub Cadet and I can honestly say that it was one of his favorites. He was good with his hands and mechanically inclined so he performed maintenance and repairs on all his motor driven tools and toys. His Cub Cadet was one of the most trouble free of the lot which is why I was able to narrow down which tractors were even worth considering when his last one gave up the ghost... it was not a Cub Cadet. The field was quickly reduced to two tractors, the Cub Cadet XT1 LT42 and one built by a competitor. Dollar for dollar both machines were for all intents and purposes, equals, however what pushed the Cub forward in my thinking was a feature that wasn't available on the competitor's unit, specifically, cruise control. The lot I mow is just over an acre with lots of trees and shrubs but there are spans where not having to hold down an accelerator pedal is appreciated. A secondary selling point in addition to cruise control which helped me choose Cub Cadet is its '3-year unlimited hours (includes powertrain) & 5-year chassis & front axle unlimited hours warranty' which is superior to its competition. The deck of this mower is slightly shorter than the one it replaced, 42" as compared to 48" but the ride is comfortable, especially with its adjustable seat, so having to go a few more laps is no big deal. If you've operated a tractor where the deck extends well beyond its wheels you've probably nicked a tree or some other object along the way however with the XT1 LT42 the left side of its deck finishes almost flush with the outside edge of its left front wheel, a safety bonus I didn't initially see. While the XT1 is very nimble it is also louder than anticipated. I attribute this to its vented hood design. Maybe the vents are a trade-off which help the motor run cooler and extend its life. Ear muffs bring motor noise down to a level which permits me to comfortably listen to my MP3 player as I mow. One suggestion I have for Cub Cadet would be to edit XT1 LT42's user documents to include specific instructions for changing XT1's break-in oil at the 5 hour run time mark. While oil changes are part of the maintenance chart, neither the separate Kohler Owner's Manual for the motor nor the Cub Cadet Operator's Manual indicate that the first oil change is a one quart job. The manner in which the manuals are written make it easy to add more oil to the motor than is required and if you don't pay attention you can set the engine up for failure early on. To anyone considering purchase of an XT1 LT42, take time to check little things like tire pressure, etc. It appears the unit's tires are inflated well above the recommended PSI clearly marked on tire sidewalls, presumably to give the tractor a little more stability and bounce as it were during shipping. Overinflated tires wear out faster and tend to dig into turf, especially during turns. I am very happy with the fit, finish and performance of my XT1 LT42 Cub Cadet and with how well it mows, yielding a well groomed lawn. Its controls are sensibly arranged, easy to understand and operate. Dad would agree.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No shifting [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am impressed that this mower needs no shifting while mowing. With other brands, it is necessary to shift between forward and reverse. I thought this was quite a drawback for a new mower. Also, when activated, this mower will mow while in the reverse direction. The hydro-static transmission operates smoothly at any speed. The turning radius is very good; a plus while mowing small areas. I could go on with details of why I really like this tractor. Overall, this is a well built tractor and after 3 years of flawless service I'm happy I purchased a CUB CADET

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent Lawn Tractor Bought this in August to replace my zero turn. Works well. But just a bit longer to mow now. As others said it is loud, ssf o I have been yding ear p eye protection more regularly. It should be noted as in other reviews (read after purchase) the oil filter was on so tight from the factory I had to return to the store to have them remove it to complete the break in the maintenance. Old farmer's tip. Use grease instead of oil on the filter seal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super Buy Replaced mower of 17 plus years and the comfort and cut on this mower is amazing! With all the rain my grass has been higher than normal to cut and it plows through it and cannot even tell it was higher than normal. The comfort driving and riding is my key to buying it, I shopped around and kept going back to this one, SO GLAD, best purchase ever! I only wish the 42" had the bluetooth, but still great to moniter the hours and will alert you if any issues (low oil, low battery), You wont regret going Cub Cadet

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great lawn tractor I have owned Cub Cadet for years. 1966 thru 1984. They required a lot of work due to their age. My wife said sell them and get a new one in the spring. I chose Cub Cadet over the others, (lots of hours on the net), because of the 42" deck with 4 gauge wheels and the tight turning radius. My yard is hilly and wider mowers tend to scalp it. Not this one. I also purchased the Fast Tach rear bagger because I have tow behind equipment. Pull two pins and the bagger is off. This year our free yard waste dump is closing @ the end of the season, so I purchased and installed the mulching kit. Works very well except the plug isn't a tight seal. Fixed that with foam self stick installation around the inside of the plug. I'll need to add the rear weight kit so I can go uphill, which will hinder my use of towable equipment. I am highly satisfied with my tractor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great mower I bought this in February 2019 , it has 10 hours on it , so far it has did really good , I got the XT1 LT42 EFI , fuel injection is real nice starts easy in cold or hot weather , when it throws the grass out it spreads the grass out so you don't need to rake , transmission is really great , you can push a button one time when you start the mower and mow in reverse while you are mowing , plenty of power , great turning radius around trees , I would recommend this for you to buy , I like the hour meter

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Gobs of power! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I purchased this tractor at the end of the season, and have only had the opportunity to use it twice. One of those uses was to mulch leaves from multiple oak trees. The mower has the power to easily mulch a carpet of leaves, while progressing across the lawn at a good pace. The resulting mulch is very finely pulverized. The only thing that has been an issue is the ability to contain the mulched material under the deck. With the mulch kit installed, the deck appears to be completely contained area for the mulch to be dealt with. However, the positioning of the blades with respect to the deck skirt forces you to lower the cut-height dramatically to prevent mulched material from flying out below the deck. When you lower the deck far enough to contain the mulched material, you are cutting the lawn VERY low. This is not a large problem if you are in the middle of the yard, but makes a mess around the house and retaining walls. With that said, the balance of the mower has worked flawlessly, and I would consider this unit again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lawn tractor Purchased in March 2016... After a lot of searching reviewing and head scratching I decided on the XT1 Enduro tractor... I have put 10+ hours on it so far and really enjoy the mower... Enjoy the hydro-static transmission... Very comfortable for the time it takes cutting my yard...Has cut mowing time by 15 to 20 minutes...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good mower I have had this mower for about 2 months. The only thing I think needs fixed is the mulching accessory. This item does not seal tight all the way around and allows grass to be forced out of the edges. I like the turning radius as well as the ability to mow in reverse. The head lights are not very bright but then again in the city I can not run it at night. I purchased the rake accessory as well and it works good.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not totally impressed Bought it in Feb at first everything was good. After 4 months of use the koler motor is leaking oil around the valve cover. Then I noticed it was not cutting the grass properly it was leaving grass uncut. I found that the blades have excessive ware and have cracks starting at the end moving towards the center of the blades!! This I is very unsafe and should get better life out of these blades a lot more than 4 months of use!!!! And the steering is sloppy and loose. I have to constantly correct the steering to cut in a straight line!!!! Outside these issues I like the big 50" cutting deck the turning radius and being able to control the speed and backing up via the foot controls.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from trouble free [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've owned my Cub Cadet for 4 years, now, and it's the best investment i could have made! it starts right up, every time, runs smoothly, and mows great. it's comfortable to drive, and is easy to use...even my wife has mowed a couple of times! the hour meter even reminds you when it's time to change the oil and the air filter. i mow about a third of an acre, on 3 different lots, and it takes no time at all. the Kohler engine is quiet and efficient. i don't know that i'll ever buy another brand...and as well as this mower is doing, i probably won't have to!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tough lil' guy! I've been pleasantly surprised by the willpower of this little guy. I purchased a home on 20 acres (mostly woodland) which has been largely overgrown (since the property sat vacant for three years.) I've been using this little beast to beat-back Mother Nature, and reclaim/tame the land. This little sucker has been acting like a mini-brush-hog for me -- cutting down endless saplings. I'm mowing through wet/marshy areas, and TALL/THICK grasses and reeds. In about a month of harsh use, it has only bogged-down once or twice due to HEAVY/THICK conditions. Most of the time, however, whatever your can run over will get sliced & diced and tossed out the side. Overall, I'm VERY PLEASED (even impressed) by this lil' riding mower. It has the heart of a much bigger mower! I grew up on commercial zero-turn riding mowers back in the day (Yazoo and Howard mowers, with 72" cutting decks, etc.) So, the change to a sit-on-top riding mower is taking some time to adjust to. Before you read the feedback below, FIRST realize that I'm LOVING, LOVING, LOVING this mower!!! But, nothing is perfect... General issues/feedback: 1.) This lil' guy does slip when things are wet, and gets stuck. With all the safety shut-off precautions, there's no way to get off and PUSH the mower (while it's still in-gear and helping itself.) So, you either need to have someone ELSE help push you. Or, drag it out with another vehicle. I understand that the larger models DO have a differential-lock system. (I'm envious...) I also noticed that Cub Cadet offers a weight-kit for this mower (which might help?) I might also consider switching to a more-aggressive tire/tread, too? (or chains?) 2.) The automatic safety shut-off on the seat is a bit too much "nanny protection" for me. Example: As I was approaching high/thick grasses in an unfamiliar area, I tried to stand-up to see over the hood (to see if I was going to hit anything unwanted?) But, when I stood-up, the mower automatically shut-off. I think this safety switch is a GREAT idea. But, much like the button to allow/disallow blades/mowing while backing-up, I wish there was something similar to (temporarily) override or shut-off the seat safety switch. Maybe a foot button on the deck that you can step-on to transfer the feature to the foot switch? e.g. if you foot comes off the switch, then the mower shuts-off? That way, you can still have an automatic shut-off in case the rider is tossed-off the mower? 3.) I'm not accustomed to "taking a beating" when I mow. With the front-deck zero-turn mowers, you can run the mower deck under trees and such -- without going under the trees, yourself. Ditto with "hanging" the mower deck over ditches and such (while the drive wheels are still on safe/level ground.) With these sit-on-top riding mowers, YOU are pretty much going wherever the blades go. If the blades need to go under a tree, YOU will be riding under those same low-hanging tree limbs. This isn't really a knock-against this SPECIFIC mower. I simply contemplated a zero-turn vs a ride-on-top, and wanted to make newbies aware of the issues/risks. 2b.) Item 3, also takes me back to item #2 (seat safety switch.) I used to do my fair share of yoga poses on our old riding mower. e.g. hang off one side of the mower (like hanging over the side of a catamarn sailboat.) I did this to shift/apply weight to the wheels for traction, and/or to avoid going under trees, etc. This mower won't allow you to "hang out" or lean over the side. Your butt has to remain in the seat at all times. 4.) SO MANY safety shut-off systems. You almost need a pre-flight safety checklist to start this thing. Mower deck has to be disengaged. Brake pedal has to be depressed. Butt has to be in the seat. Transmission in neutral position. Lord help you if you also forgot to press/reengage the L-shaped key back into position before mounting your mower. (e.g. when you get off to re-engage it, the mower will die.) Oh, and that reverse mowing setting, too!!! (That one catches me a LOT!) You find yourself wondering why you can't mow? The mower keeps dying? OOPS!!! I forgot to either disengage the mower deck, or turn the key and press the button to allow reverse-mowing. I'm SLOWLY getting used to the nanny-mower world. Safety First (as they say.) But, I can't tell you how many times I've had to scratch my head, and stare at the thing, and WONDER -- "What am I forgetting? Why won't this thing start THIS time?" 5.) NEED MORE HOOK-UP OPTIONS!!! In this day and age, I can hardly imagine ANYTHING not having some sort of receiver hitch that's welded/bolted to the frame. The little "lip" (with a hole) on this thing is barely sufficient for a cart/wagon. Hey Cub Cadet: People use these things for MORE than just mowing grass! We move boats and airplanes around. We need to move dirt and mulch around. Many of us already have a variety of trailers that we need to simply move around the property. Our lil riders need to have the ability to function as a "tow tug" -- to shuffle trailers around. We also need the ability to drag some Class-Zero hitch gear, too! You should also offer additional lighting bolt-on options (backup lights, light bars for the front of the mower, etc.) Oh, and a bolt-on toolbox. The little drink caddy and cell phone cup thing just invite things to bounce-off into the yard (and get mowed-over.) We need a bold-on (optional) toolbox (with a latching lid) behind the seat. That way, we can put pruning sheers in there, a set of gloves, safety glasses/goggles, sunblock, bug spray, sunglasses, hearing protection/muffs, tow strap, trailer balls & wrench, etc. It would also be nice if there was some way to mount a receiver hitch to the front of the mower? (e.g. so we can hook-up a receiver-mounted ATV winch?) Heck, even the "option" to install some sort of stereo in the dash would also be nice?!!! I look forward to "modding" my new mower. But, I wish there were more "universal" bolt-on options, instead. Again, I'm VERY, VERY, VERY happy with the mower. It's working BETTER than expected, and I have even MORE plans/upgrades planned for it! As a sit-on-top, I kinda just want it to be like a mini-tractor, instead of "JUST" a riding mower?...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from When it runs [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great mower ,cuts perfect since it runs. Bought mine May of 2018 work good first day brought home. Next time I tried it would not start .took back to dealer replaced switch . Month later , brought home cut great that day. Next time same thing I try to cut. Take back to dealer needs a fuel pump. Thanks to back order 10 month later I get it back run perfect cut great. I bought this due to warranty and great reviews on EFI technology. I had changed jobs working rotating shift . Tired of spending more time working on my tired Troy built than cutting grass.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far it has been great I really like the xt1 efi so fedar. Easy starts, cuts great, and bluetooth maintenance tracker is awesome. There is a lot i like about this mower but there are a few things i wish were of better quality. Like the hood, it looks aggressive which i really like but its plastic and seems like the tabs that lock the pieces together will not hold up over the years, like the old steel ones. I'd pay for the same looking hood if it came in steel as an option. I only have 3 hours on it total and there are already hairline cracks and discolored stress marks on those tabs. That is probably the biggest complaint at the moment. Turning radius is great, gets through wet grass fairly easy and very conservative on fuel. I know people complain about having to press a button in order to cut in reverse but it's really not that big of a deal. Although I wish you get off with it still running with the blades off for moving downed branches or opening and closing gates. That is kind of a pain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product is outstanding I have had my Cadet for about a month. First time I used it was getting use to the hydrostatic drive, turning radius, and all the other good things my old mower didn't have. Now that I am half way confident with it I really hate to get off of it and put it up. The XT1 is a fantastic piece of equipment that will be with me for many years to come. I am in Strongville. One more thing the new LED headlights actually light your yard up for late mowing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nothing runs like a cub cadet Best bang for a consumers dollar. I researched this product for 2 years before pulling the trigger. When I purchased it from the dealer, I knew more about it than he did. However he did not even offer me a 5 dollar cub cadet hat which would have sweetened the deal and let everybody know that nothing runs like a Cub Cadet!
